For your home or for your business, retaining walls can be a large financial commitment and therefore you want something that looks great and lasts a long time. A quality retaining wall will give you better use of your land, especially if it has a degree of slope on it.

There are a number of retaining wall options available, such as:

• Concrete sleepers;
• Permapine / Hardwood sleepers;
• Besser block interlocking systems; and
• Gabion walls (a retaining wall made from wire “baskets” filled with rocks).

In our experience, concrete sleeper retaining walls with steel retaining posts are by far the most popular type of retaining wall. This is largely due to the wide range of styles and colours available.

In addition, a concrete sleeper retaining wall, when installed correctly, has the following features:

• They won’t rot or warp like traditional wooden (railway) type sleepers;
• Fence posts can be welded to the top of the steel retaining posts to allow a fence to be installed on top of the retaining wall along a boundary line– this is an attractive option when space is at a premium; and
• They are relatively quick to install.

Customers should note that any proposed retaining walls in excess of one metre high require Council approval.
